Elon Musk appears to be crashing Tesla faster than a dodgy self-driving AI or the faulty accelerator pedal on one of his cybertrucks. You’d have to have a a heart of stone not to laugh.

"It seems to me that the occupations are not some disruption of the university's normal function, but an attempt to fulfill what should be the mission of university: to think and live critically. At this moment in time, they are the university. "

Two cat-focused FB memories today. We lost our sweet old girl Sassy a bit over two years ago. Three years ago we were constantly together. One year ago, I was coming into Almost Home to visit the cats, and applying to become a volunteer

Hey, American college students, it would be helpful for the U.S., the world, Palestinians, and Israelis, if you would turn your attention to defeating Donald Trump in November. Read about his fascist plans in this recent extended interview with him. time.com/6972021/donald-trump-

I lightly edited and republished a piece previously in my Medium in my Substack where anyone can read it. The highest good in Plato is impersonal, but does that mean to attain it, we leave our personalities behind?

A good article on the immediately awful effects of Florida’s 6 week abortion ban. Once again some U.S. states are using their laws to subordinate and oppress, with the aid and comfort of the federal Supreme Court. Gift access: wapo.st/3Wmi7Eg

Mathijs van de Sande :antifa:

A great piece that William Morris wrote for Mayday in 1896. Granted, his choice of words is at times somewhat archaic and problematic - especially when he speaks fondly of colonized peoples (and their resistance against colonization/capitalism). But other than that, this is something that unfortunately has not lost even a little bit of relevance in the past 130 years:

"[N]ot all the discoveries of science, not all the tremendous organisation of the factory and the market will produce true wealth, so long as the end and aim of it all is the production of profit for the privileged classes.

Nothing better will happen than more waste and more, only perhaps exercised in different directions than now it is. Waste of material, waste of labour (for few indeed even of the genuine wage earners are engaged in the production of utilities). Waste, in one word, of LIFE."

Near the end of the conclusion to part 3 of his Prolegomena, Kant sets down some conjectures about the "natural ends of reason's uses of transcendent concepts." Here's a new Sadler's Lectures podcast episode about that!

Hi friends,

The alt-text.org alt text library project needs a new leader, I have brain cancer.

I built a working, scalable, proof of concept library of shared alt text with fuzzy matching.

I'd like to connect with the #accessibility dev community. I want to hand the project off to a team or a leader if anyone is willing to take it over.

Github: github.com/alt-text-org
WIP MVP: a site designed for writing alt text with a private library: my.alt-text.org

Boosts appreciated

This is a bad decision by Columbia’s administration. Maybe you’d like it if these teenagers had let’s say more considered political opinions. The problem is the people most excited for this sort of police action do have well worked-out views, and they’re authoritarians who hate universities.

"On a day of many important stories, the most important news came from Donald Trump's interview with Time Magazine. See Donald Trump on What His Second Term Would Look Like | TIME. In the interview, Trump confirmed that he will attempt to exercise dictatorial powers in a second term.

We have been warned.

We ignore Trump's threats at our peril and the peril of our democracy."
