A nice memory from a decade ago. Andi invited Temple Grandin to the Culinary, and we actually had good bit of conversation with her over those days. Gradin is best known as an expert on meat production and autism, but the topic on her mind with me was our vulnerable power grids

Today I brushed up on one of the funnier counterarguments in philosophy.

There's a view called the Equal Weight View which says that if you and an epistemic peer disagree about something, you ought to give their opinion equal weight to your own, and so you should give up your belief and become agnostic until further investigation breaks the impasse.

But philosophers disagree about whether the Equal Weight View is true. So defenders of the Equal Weight View ought to give up on their view.

@pjw in political philosophy it's pretty clear: either socialism or barbarism

in aesthetics I'm not so sure. I've a feeling the field might be too small to sustain trends

@pjw animal ethics...
probably the same we do for 50 years now. we just hope somebody listens...

phenomenology, who knows.... probably about how we can make or discern whether computational models can have phenomenological experience. it will probably have something to do with 'ai' and neuronal computing

How can we protect the sense of agency of young people experiencing a mental health crisis in clinical encounters? We discuss this issue in an open access paper where we introduce the agential stance: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/ I believe the agential stance applies to many other contexts too! #philosophy @philosophyofpsychiatry @psychiatry

Grumpy Philosopher

The best thing about this Truss, Braverman, Anderson Tory racism row has been Oliver Dowden, the most supine, craven man in politics, laughably claiming he‘d have spoken out against Bannon‘s hate speech if he‘d been in Truss‘s shoes, before going on to defend a torrent of bigotry from his colleagues. Joke of a man. #ukpolitics

J'aurais jamais cru que je lirais ça un jour sur le site de l'assemblée nationale mais je pense que toutes les barrières sont déjà tombées ces dernières années et ça en dit long sur la gravité de la situation.

New video, the 11th one in my Course on Epistemology: "Foundationalism and Coherentism: What I Think".

In which I claim that experience is an active process involving judgement; that some beliefs are not up for grabs; and that justification is not about the in-the-moment structure of my beliefs, but about my responsibility as I pursue the project of enquiry.

This is the story of someone in Europe writing a scraper I didn't notice and costing me 15x my normal bandwidth bill.

Unless Fastly can help me, this is going to cost in the region of US$3000.

I can't believe this still needs to be said, but don't scrape fedi.

37 per cent of Germans voted for the Nazis in 1932. That followed a catastrophic defeat in war, a humiliating peace, a ruinous inflation and the Great Depression.
At least 40 per cent of Americans will vote for Trump and the Republicans, running on a fascist program. Among their most important concerns: DEI initiatives and pronouns.

Good Think Hunting

"And 'Nothing' is very strong: strong enough to steal away a man’s best years not in sweet sins but in a dreary flickering of the mind over it knows not what and knows not why, in the gratification of curiosities so feeble that the man is only half aware of them [...] in the long, dim labyrinth of reveries that have not even lust or ambition to give them a relish."
— C. S. Lewis on social media, in The Screwtape Letters (1942).
