If you missed the latest episode of the Wisdom for Life radio show when it ran, or you'd like to see Dan and I in the conversation, here's the show recording of the episode, where we looked at a number of philosophical ideas people get mixed up about!

Shot two personalized Cameo videos in the last two days, one for an upcoming birthday, the other for Fathers Day. I really enjoy reading the notes from the people who request them, and then coming up with a good message for the recipients of the videos!

Lynn Conway passed away the other day. Many words have been said elsewhere about her remarkable career achievements as an engineer, educator, and activist but I wanted to share a brief personal anecdote.
We had a meeting at University of Michigan early in my PhD circa 2017 to talk about design problems. She was very excited that someone finally gets that the Mead-Conway geometric rules are inequalities and thus allow for many solutions with a given topology of necessary transistor connections. We sadly never got around to computing the entropy of VLSI layouts, but this acknowledgement was hugely inspirational.
She also formulated the geometric rules in terms of a fundamental lengthscale lambda that kept shrinking over decades due to Moore's law, but the rules themselves apply today as they did in 1979. So if you hear someone in science talk about "scale free design rules" (common in nanoscience and colloid studies), Lynn Conway did it first back in the day! What a legend!

I'll try 1 first, and if that doesn't work, I'll move on to 2 (because this is how scientifically-minded people should proceed). 😆

I released this episode of Mind & Desire to my paid Substack subscribers a little over a month ago. Now it's available to the public! It discusses some insights Socrates expresses that readers of Plato's Crito might miss

Yesterday, I fell off my bike in the rain, and so I'm feeling pretty battered and bruised. Today, I dropped my mobile phone and shattered the screen. The two events are connected: I bruised my thumb coming off my bike, and only now am I coming to appreciate the miraculous usefulness of opposable thumbs.
There are two possibilities here: 1) I am tired after a long semester, and just need to sleep; 2) I have attracted the attentions of a mischievous ghost, and require the services of an exorcist.

I have so many interview requests that I'm actually starting to lose track of them at this point...

But I'm really glad there is so much interest. This is terrifying stuff: SpaceX and other companies are dumping stuff on the ground that could very easily kill people. Countries need to enforce the rules that already exist, and the regulations NEED to be updated to take into account how terrifyingly many re-entries are happening now.

I'm sad to report the death of Ed Stone, the NASA scientist who was the heart & soul of the Voyager program. Spending time with him for my Discover magazine profile was a highlight of my career.

I did my best to capture the experience:

Comme à chaque élection, rappel : les territoires ne votent pas, ce sont les électeurs qui votent. Ca ne change pas le résultat final, mais ça change la perspective biaisée qui peut en être donnée.

Crazy how he can just steal his own campaign money.

Trump has moved $4.6 million of campaign money into his business empire, according to a review of Federal Election Commission records.

But I'm SO HAPPY about how everything went today!

Journalists chasing down SpaceX employees on a grain farm in the middle of nowhere!

SpaceX maybe getting held accountable! (Well, big maybe, but I did my best here, and I'll keep fighting!)

Donuts, Uhauls, snuggly farm cats, and international law. Wow.
