The tangled web
In which I find myself unironically missing old, hard-copy Yellow Pages.
I came into the possession of a vintage sport coat which was in excellent condition except for several strata of dust on the shoulders, from hanging unused but uncovered for decades. The care instructions say dry clean only, so I went looking for a dry cleaner. The internet suggested there were sever…

There’s much to enjoy (both poetry and prose) in Christian Wiman’s new collection of essays and poetry, Zero at the Bone.
(We need *both* creative and destructive forms of writing in my own area of philosophy.)

Given his stature in philosophy, and for all its apparent incongruence, John #Dewey's "mystic experience" is surprisingly unknown. Yet its conclusion is a thing of serene beauty. He described it to Max Eastman, maybe 60 yrs after the fact, for Eastman's book 'Heroes I Have Known':

In Arthur Machen's The Hill of Dreams, Lucian feels alone on a busy street; people pass each other like ghosts, "each intent on his own secret."
As a struggling writer, he can't explain to anyone else what he does all day. The world can understand books & published articles, but there's something obscene about discussing the creative processes by which they are made
Humanity condemned to a fatal belief: that inner lives are supposed to remain hidden & souls must be invisible to one another

For an example in a #PhilMath paper, I'm looking into this sum:
Sum[(-1)^(l + 1) 2^2^l, {l, 0, k}] for odd k.
It diverges fast & I have values for k up to 9, but I'm wondering if there exists a closed form for it. I tried some techniques from Concrete Mathematics (to no avail) and Wolfram Alpha exceeded computation time. Probably I shouldn't expect a closed form due to the iterated exponent.
Suggestions? Or could someone check it for me in Mathematica, please? 💡➕ :boost_requested: #ICanHazSums

One of those days. Messed up my lower back yesterday basically doing nothing, and as someone who has dealt with these things off and on since my teens (and not looking for advice!), I've done all the stuff that typically helps. Gotta rework my rather busy schedule for the next few days now

Aside from the University sector being better resourced & less hated by its government, I can see why people might be more chill working in Switzerland than the UK. My home university in England has roughly 3,600 staff for over 19,000 students Here in Basel, the university has around 6000 staff for over 13,000 students. It's not hard to imagine what a difference that might make to the quality of our work and to our ability to live good lives. #academia

Quite the letter from student journalists at Columbia: “when student journalists have to fight insidious methods of suppression to conduct an indispensable job for our community, we must use our platform to outwardly condemn the NYPD’s abhorrent use of force against the University’s students and journalists. In this, Columbia is more than complicit—Columbia is to blame.”
