I was saddened to hear that Charles Parsons (1933-2024), the philosopher of mathematics, has died.

His 1965 paper "Frege's theory of numbers" re-inforced my early fascination with logicism, and I've been reading Parsons with great admiration on and off ever since.

I had the pleasure of reviewing his 2008 Big Book, *Mathematical Thought and Its Objects* -- OK, I was unpersuaded by some of his major claims, but that's philosophy for you. Here's the review (short version): logicmatters.net/resources/pdf

But that review really only touches on two of his themes, and there's much more to wrestle with. I battled at length with the twists and turns of his book here, learning (I hope!) a lot: logicmatters.net/resources/pdf

According to YouTube, a whopping 92% of my viewers are male. That's pretty disconcerting to me, although I wonder:

(1) How accurate these statistics are, given that surely almost nobody tells Google their gender.
(2) What the overall gender distribution on YouTube is.

I could certainly do more videos about women philosophers (although the epistemology course I'm currently making features a good number of contemporary female philosophers), but it seems unlikely to remove this massive gap.

Two #knitting books and some handmade-labels and a needle gauge. It was 50% off all books at Stephen and Penelope last week, so I 'splurged'.

I live in the Netherlands but never really go to Amsterdam, so never visited their shop, but happy to be able to delve into some Stephen West patterns now 😀

I routinely teach non-majors philosophical works in intro classes. In my experience, if you give them what they might need, many students will come away having learned quite a bit

My article on fine-tuning arguments for the multiverse is now online at Noûs!

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10 #philsci

I examine the muddle of issues involved in the debate on whether the fact that life would be impossible if cosmological constants were different warrants belief in a multiverse (the division between Bayesian background and evidence, indexicality, semantic rigidity, selection effects) to sort things out.

The article is in open access thanks to Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

Could be damning as Marcuse also called Adorno at times incomprehensible. However, I tend to think ‘they gave it a try, I’ll at least try to understand them’ 🤷🏼📖😄😵‍💫

In the conclusion to part 3 of his Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics, Kant discusses how reason seeks out an unrealizable completion of matters of experience and a kind of satisfaction as well. Here's a Sadler's Lectures podcast episode discussing it

AI-generated books on Amazon now have the potential to kill people, as they've moved into the realm of mushroom foraging. Guides have popped up like, well, mushrooms, packed with information that makes no sense and could easily be dangerous, illustrated with structures that are "the mycological equivalent of a picture of a hot blond with six fingers and too many teeth," writes Vox's Constance Grady. Here's more.
