Neither #AI-concerned nor AI-skeptical groups substantially updated their views about AI risk.

…despite “8 weeks (…median: 31 hours) reading background materials, developing forecasts, and engaging in online discussion and video calls” (N = 22).

Another report from the #Forecasting Research Institute finding that sustained, collaborative education and reasoning barely impacted forecasts: forecastingresearch.org/news/a

I’ve just sat my first exam since my PhD viva, which was 12 years ago. I did not enjoy it. You might think that would give me a sense of solidarity with my students, but you would be wrong, because I am a bad person.

I have the greatest admiration for #LetitiaJames, New York Attorney General. She has repeatedly held Trump and his businesses or foundation accountable to the same laws everyone else is. I applaud her intelligence and her courage. Some reporting on the financial and political situation Trump now faces due to her success. wapo.st/4cqzXeL (gift access).

“What is called ‘academic freedom’ is much more than academic matter. In fact, it is in the higher institutions about which the question is usually raised that there exists at present the most freedom of thought and discussion. Influences which tend to suppression are most powerful in lower schools where the larger number receive their training. Objective discussion of social conditions, especially in their economic implications, is rare and difficult.” — John Dewey, “The Influence of Education” (1930, CW Supplementary 1: 38)

I can‘t get excited about the Three Body Problem coming to Netflix. All I can remember of reading it was coming away thinking that it was unpleasant. Nicely written in parts, interesting story, but a lingering aftertaste of misogyny and a sense that the author liked totalitarianism rather too much. They say it‘s true to the books, so I think I might pass.

I've found an image from the 14th C Book of Hours that accurately depicts me going through peer review, shortly before I vanquish Reviewer 1.

Other (please explain) ?

ok, there's all there is, each of us part of it, in a way descending from and returning to, and we may experience/else delve into/ this embedding more or less ...

... confessions use to answer rather nonsensical questions they raised for that end ...

... in a way recommend to follow Kurt Gödel, cited having said 'religion is good, religions are not' ...

Good stuff by @raphaelmilliere on the limits of benchmark testing in AI, and the dangers of overrelying on them and overestimating their value.

"This political choice- elevating a single unpublished study which examined a total of zero patients and ran a total of zero tests- when tens of thousands of others contradict its findings, is unsurprising. The political choice to do so on a day intended to draw attention to the suffering of tens of millions of people is cruel in the extreme." Me, an idiot: “So, kids, by setting the thermostat a little lower and eating less meat, we’re doing our part to make the world more sustainable”

VCs, very smart: “We just raised $100 billion dollars from the sovereign wealth funds of three petrostates to build the world’s largest AI supercomputer. It uses as much power and water as Guatemala and the primary use case is for management consultants to autogenerate powerpoints for justifying mass layoffs.”

I went to a talk by Christian Greiffenhagen on how Mathematical Peer Review works, which was unexpectedly fun.

I know a few anecdotes, but the talk provides a systematic overview of math peer review as observed by a sociologist with a math background. To some degree, I can now see why some conferences in TCS feel different from other more practical disciplines.

Sadly, the talk was not recorded but here is the paper anyway:

My fiance thinks it's bad that I think of payments in terms of hours of my life.

I make $22/hr

I paid about one hour of my life for lunch

I went drinking and spent 5 hours of my life there in food and drinks

Rent costs me 20 hours of my life

It helps keep everything in perspective personally

Never imagine that [4] can acceptably perform the role of a noun in a sentence, meaning a paper which has been written by people.

The people deserve their names to be put in the sentence, with [4] as a parenthesis, enabling readers to look the paper up.
